Where we laid our heads tonight.
Sunny morning. Our first stop was down to the ocean beach to see the wreck of the Peter Iredale. It is the rusting remains of an English sailing ship that ran aground during a storm in 1906.
Then we headed up the spit and around to the north side, to the beach along the Columbia River. There is also a wildlife viewing bunker on the inland side of the parking lot, but the grasses in front are so tall that you can’t really see anything, and I’m not sure what you would see anyway. There was nothing to say what kinds of wildlife you would see, other than a bunch of birds. From there we headed back to the south side of the spit, to an observation deck that looks out on nothing but water to the west, the mouth of the Columbia River to the north, the rest of the spit to the east, and the coastline to the south. You can see the man made jetty stretching way out into the ocean.
From there, we drove back down the spit and to a little place called Hammond, along the river side of the spit. Not much more than a boat basin, so we kept on going to Warrenton, a slightly larger centre located about the centre of the spit. Found a little bar with wifi, grabbed a bite to eat and checked the emails and then headed off to Fred Meyers for groceries. The place doesn’t seem very big, but they have the Freddy’s, Costco, Home Depot, Staples and who knows what else (all in the same general area). I’m thinking that they have tried to keep Astoria as quaint and original as possible, and let all the modern and big box development happen in this one part of Warrenton. Most tourist brochures lump the two places together as Astoria-Warrenton.
Back to camp for relaxation, reading, happy hour, dinner and campfire. Noticed that our little squirrel friend had a potato that he was munching on, on his stump. Turned out that he had helped himself to some of our neighbour's food, including chewing through her backpack to get at something inside. Needless to say, they aren't leaving stuff out anymore. The wind today was really warm, so we were able to sit around the fire until quite late. Then off to bed.
Until next time, dear followers.
