Where we laid our heads tonight.
Day started off with a high fog again, but reasonably warm. Sun was shining by our first stop. First stop today was Fort Clatsop, the winter camp established by Capts. Lewis and Clark at the end of their expedition that followed the Missouri River from the east coast and then the Columbia River to the west coast.
Can only imagine what those small rooms must have smelled like after a couple of days, especially the enlisted men's quarters, with 8 guys sharing a room. Interesting displays at the visitor centre, and some of the staff had interesting stories to tell.
From there we headed into Astoria to find a laundromat. We used our so-called smart phones to find such an establishment, and got directed somewhere totally bizarre - the middle of a residential neighbourhood. I guess we could have tried knocking on a few doors to see in anyone would take pity on us and let us use their machines. Anyway, we tried heading to another laundromat on the other side of Astoria, but took a turn too early out of a roundabout and ended up on the bridge back to Warrenton (where we had pretty much just been when at the Fort). Found a laundromat over there, got the laundry done, and headed back to Astoria for (now a late) lunch and a stroll through the downtown area. High fog had rolled back in by now, and today’s wind was noticeably cooler than yesterday’s. Checked out the local Costco, picked up a couple of essentials and then back to camp by around 6. Lazy evening. Watched a bit of TV (about the writers of British sitcoms) and did some reading.
Until next time, dear followers.
