Monday, Sept 16 – Well, that certainly wasn't in the forecast. Shortly after retiring last night, we could hear a light bit of rain on the roof. Drifted off to sleep and woke up later to a much heavier downpour. I kept hearing what I thought was a very agitated sea crashing on the shore not too far away. As I'm trying to drift back to sleep I think I see a flash through my closed eyelids. A couple of seconds later a great rumble occurs and the rain pounds down even harder. A couple of minutes later another flash and instant crack – it's right overhead. It moved on, but the rain continued off and on until morning. Eventually the skies cleared, we jumped in the car and started heading south. Some amazing scenery along the way, with crashing waves and blue, blue sky. The coolest spot was in Depoe Bay, right along the highway where you could get quite a soaking from spray. Salty lips and crunchy hair by the time we continued on our way.
Stopped at the Chowder Bowl in Newport for lunch - delicious clam chowder and we split an order of halibut and fries, finishing off by splitting an order of the most amazing bread pudding with a butter and brandy sauce. Thanks for the recommendation, Faye. Drove down to Waldport, had a brief look around and reminisced about being there with the kids sometime in the 90's, then turned around and started the drive back. Couple of stops along the way to view scenery or check out a little shop and back at the rig by dinner time. Sat out enjoying what was left of the sunny day, then quiet evening in.
